South 24 Parganas (West Bengal): In a shocking and brutal incident, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Rezzak Khan was shot and hacked to death by unidentified assailants late Thursday night in the Chaltaberia area of South 24 Parganas district, reported the Indian Express.
The 38-year-old political leader was returning home from a party meeting when the attack took place around 9:45 pm near a canal in Siristala, just 500 meters from his residence in Chak Maricha village. Eyewitness accounts and police reports confirm that Khan was first shot multiple times and then assaulted with sharp weapons by a group of attackers.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Khan was declared brought dead. He served as the TMC president of Chaltaberia and was a close aide of Canning East MLA and TMC leader Saokat Mollah.
The gruesome murder has sparked intense political reactions and unrest in the region. The case falls under the jurisdiction of Uttar Kashipore police station. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma visited the scene, and the body has been sent for autopsy. Police confirmed that several attackers were involved and an investigation is underway.
A statement issued by the police said:
“On July 10 at around 9:45 pm, Rajjak Khan of Chak Maricha village under Chaltaberia Gram Panchayat was attacked by unknown persons near Siristala, under Uttar Kashipore PS. He was shifted to a hospital and declared dead. Investigation has been initiated.”
MLA Saokat Mollah accused the Indian Secular Front (ISF) of orchestrating the murder, blaming MLA Naushad Siddiqui for allegedly directing the attack. “Under Naushad Siddiqui’s instructions, ISF miscreants murdered Rezzak. We demand immediate and strict action against the culprits,” Mollah said.
The ISF, however, has denied all allegations.
The incident has deepened political tensions in South 24 Parganas, with TMC leaders demanding a swift and impartial investigation to ensure justice for Rezzak Khan.
