Traders in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli Demand Muslim Families Vacate Khansar by Year-End

Chamoli, Uttarakhand: A traders’ group in the Khansar town of Chamoli district has called for the eviction of around 15 Muslim families, asking them to leave by December 31, 2024. The group’s decision was made following a rally in which Hindu traders reportedly raised inflammatory slogans, reports the Hindustan Times.

Virendra Singh, president of the traders’ association, announced that the resolution was passed unanimously as a “preventive measure.” He warned, “If these families do not leave by the deadline, legal action will be initiated against them, as well as any landlords who continue renting to them, will be fined Rs.10,000.”

In addition, the traders’ body declared that hawkers would be prohibited from entering villages in the Khansar valley, with violators facing similar penalties. Singh stated that these actions were necessary to prevent potential incidents involving Hindu women, referencing concerns in other towns.

A local Muslim resident, speaking anonymously, expressed concern over the resolution. “We have lived here peacefully for years and have no criminal record. This seems to be an attempt to disrupt communal harmony and force us out for economic reasons,” the individual said, urging the authorities to intervene.

Chamoli Superintendent of Police, Sarvesh Panwar, said the police had not been informed of the traders’ resolution but assured that an investigation would be conducted. “We will ensure that peace and harmony are maintained, and appropriate legal action will be taken if needed,” Panwar said.

This development is part of a broader pattern of rising tensions in Uttarakhand, where Muslim traders have faced increasing pressure from Hindutva groups. Several minority families have fled the region in recent months amid threats and intimidation.
