Nagpur: Despite advancements in the 21st century, Indian women remain symbols of oppression, said Sajida Parveen, Secretary of the Women’s Wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maharashtra, in a statement. Her remarks followed a harrowing incident in Parbhani district, where a man burned his wife alive for giving birth to a third daughter.
Expressing deep regret, Parveen lamented that Indian women face injustice from birth to old age, enduring cruelty, inequality, and humiliation. She attributed this to the growing influence of materialism, which, she argued, has eroded moral values and family structures.
Highlighting grim statistics, Parveen cited the National Crime Records Bureau’s data showing 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women registered in 2022, averaging 1,220 daily. She noted that societal attitudes toward daughters remain regressive, with the birth of girls often regarded as shameful while sons are celebrated.
Parveen emphasised the Islamic perspective, recalling that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ elevated the status of women and promised paradise for parents raising daughters with care. She praised the Muslim community for celebrating the birth of daughters and ensuring women’s safety.
Calling for urgent action, Parveen stated that laws alone cannot prevent such tragedies. Society must promote respect for women, raise awareness about the harms of materialism, and instil accountability through moral education.
