Trichy Woman Dies After Dowry Pressure, Family Alleges Harassment by In Laws

Trichy: A 30-year-old woman from Vilavancode in Kanyakumari district died on Saturday after attempting suicide the previous day. Her family said dowry harassment by her in laws pushed her to take the step. The incident took place at Karumandapam where she lived with her husband’s family along with her young daughter.

Her husband Siva works in Bengaluru and visits the house once a week. Police said her family gave 125 sovereigns of gold, ten lakh rupees in cash and a car during the wedding. Relatives said the in laws demanded more money. They said the demands triggered repeated arguments. They said the woman struggled under pressure and had no support system in the house.

Police said she attempted suicide on Friday. Her family rushed her to a private hospital where she died on Saturday. The Trichy Cantonment Police registered a case of suspicious death based on a complaint filed by her father. The Revenue Divisional Officer started an inquiry into the circumstances of the death. Officials said the investigation will examine the dowry allegations and the conduct of the husband’s family.

Relatives in Vilavancode said the woman often expressed distress over the demands. They said she wanted to focus on raising her daughter. They said she feared further harassment. Activists in Tamil Nadu said the case highlights the persistent problem of dowry related violence. They asked authorities to ensure accountability in all such cases. They said victims often suffer in silence due to social pressure and fear of backlash.
