Trump Urges Erdogan to Drop Russian Oil as First Lady Appeals on Gaza

Washington: US President Donald Trump has called on Turkey to stop buying oil from Russia, pressing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to cut off funding for Moscow as the war in Ukraine continues. Speaking at the White House, Trump described halting these imports as “the best thing” Turkey could do.

The meeting concluded without firm commitments from Erdogan on lifting US sanctions or selling advanced F-35 fighter jets, though Trump expressed optimism on both issues. Turkey was removed from the F-35 programme in 2019 after acquiring Russian S-400 missile systems. US defence legislation continues to restrict the sale pending certification that Turkey has abandoned the Russian system.

Trump emphasized Erdogan’s influence with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders, suggesting the Turkish president could have a significant impact on the conflict if he chooses. Turkey is a major customer of Russian oil and gas, with imports rising by over 26% earlier this year. Trump also reiterated that Nato allies risk “funding the war against themselves” by purchasing Russian energy.

The discussion on F-35s remains sensitive, with US lawmakers citing Turkish military actions in Syria and violations of Greek airspace as concerns. Trump indicated that sanctions against Turkey could be lifted quickly if agreements are reached.

Separately, Turkey’s First Lady, Emine Erdogan, appealed to US First Lady Melania Trump to advocate for children affected by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. She described Gaza as a “children’s cemetery” and urged Trump to extend her support to Palestinian children, paralleling advocacy shown for Ukrainian children.

The White House meeting avoided public disagreement on Gaza, though Erdogan has publicly criticized Israel’s actions.
