Türkiye Joins South Africa’s Case Against Israel at ICJ

—Zaina Aman

Türkiye has officially requested to join South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), marking a significant development in international legal efforts concerning the Palestinian issue. This formal bid, presented by a Turkish delegation led by Ankara’s ambassador to The Hague, Selcuk Unal, underscores Türkiye’s commitment to addressing the situation in Gaza through legal and diplomatic channels.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry highlighted that this move reflects Türkiye’s strong dedication to ensuring that international law and justice are upheld, holding accountable those responsible for alleged violations. Türkiye joins a group of six other countries—Colombia, Nicaragua, Spain, Libya, Palestine, and Mexico—that have already sought to participate in this crucial case.

The ICJ has recently issued orders for Israel to cease its military operations in Rafah, a city that has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict. Türkiye’s intervention comes amid continued international scrutiny and condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza since the escalation of violence on October 7, 2023. By joining the case, Türkiye reinforces its commitment to advocating for human rights and the rule of law on the global stage.
