New Delhi: Under the aegis of the All India Muslim Women’s Association, two weddings were conducted in the historic old city with utmost simplicity and in strict adherence to Islamic traditions. The initiative was a result of the association’s relentless efforts, led by the esteemed member, Mrs. Zeenat Mehtab, whose persistent guidance and dedication enabled the families to perform these marriages with simplicity while upholding every aspect of Shariah.
The ceremonies took place near a mosque, where the bride’s families prepared their daughters at home and brought them to a nearby madrasa. The Nikah was performed at the mosque in the presence of male family members, and the bride’s departure was managed from the madrasa itself. The entire event was in complete compliance with Sunnah, without any un-Islamic rituals.
There were no extravagant processions like dowry demands, or un-Islamic practices like Mehndi and musical performances. Even the customary ritual of shading the bride with the Quran was replaced with imparting Quranic teachings, urging the brides to lead their lives in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah.
Dr. Asma Zehra, President of the Association, commended Mrs. Mehtab’s efforts, highlighting that such initiatives are exemplary steps towards societal reform. She emphasised the need for the Muslim community to adopt this model, making marriages simple and eliminating extravagance to curb societal issues.
The grooms’ families also displayed exemplary behaviour by refusing dowry and ensuring the brides felt comfortable by preparing a furnished room with all essential items. They even declined to take new outfits from the bride’s families, choosing to wear their own.
This marriage became a model for the community, inspiring the attendees to follow the Sunnah and make weddings a blessed and cost-effective affair. The association reiterated Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ saying, “The most blessed marriage is the one with the least expense.”
