Begusarai: Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday supported the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and said it will come into force during the tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. He also alleged that certain Muslim organisations aim to turn India into an Islamic country.
Speaking to reporters, Singh said “One Nation, One Law” and the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented across the country. His remarks come at a time when the issue has gained attention in poll-bound states.
The debate has intensified after the BJP included the Uniform Civil Code in its election manifesto for Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the policy will be implemented in the state if the party returns to power. He added that the law will exclude areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and will not apply to tribal communities.
Sarma also outlined other promises in the party’s manifesto, including action against what he described as “love jihad” and major spending on flood control measures. He said the government aims to strengthen Assam’s role in national development.
The Assam Assembly elections are scheduled in a single phase on April 9 for all 126 constituencies, with counting set for May 4. The contest will see the BJP-led NDA face the Congress in a direct political battle. The BJP is contesting in alliance with Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front, while the Congress seeks a return to power.
The remarks by the Union Minister have added to the ongoing discussion around the Uniform Civil Code and its political implications during the election period.
