Udaipur Muslim Body’s Wedding Boycott Rule Sparks Public Anger

Jaipur: A fresh controversy has broken out in Udaipur after Anjuman Talimul Islam, a federation of Muslim organisations, issued a resolution imposing restrictions on wedding celebrations and threatening social boycott for violations.

The October 24 resolution bans what it describes as “un-Islamic and wasteful” practices, including musical bands, fireworks, DJs, Qawwalis, dancing and lavish feasts. It directs families to conduct simple, disciplined ceremonies aligned with Islamic values. The document also sets up an 18-member Munjur-ul-Masail Committee to enforce compliance and includes contact numbers to report violations.

What has drawn outrage is the clause warning that any family defying these rules will face community-level exclusion. The resolution states that no Imam or Qazi should solemnise Nikah ceremonies of defaulters and that their invitations and Milad gatherings will be boycotted.

Residents from Muslim-majority localities such as Savina, Ayad, Khanjipeer and Alipura told reporters they have begun holding weddings quietly, some in the morning, to avoid confrontation. One father of a bride said his family split their wedding events after an Imam refused to conduct a Nikah with a Baraat procession.

The move has been criticised by several clerics and community leaders. Ganj Saheba Dargah president Gulam Moinuddin Qadri called the diktat “obnoxious and regressive,” urging the Anjuman to focus on education and employment instead of moral policing. Rajasthan’s Law Minister Jogaram Patel said the government would review whether the resolution violates rights to privacy and personal liberty.
