Udit Raj Urges Muslim Voters in Bihar to Avoid Vote Split

Patna: Former MP and Congress leader Udit Raj has appealed to Muslim voters in Bihar to avoid repeating what he described as a “past mistake” of supporting the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). His remarks came shortly after AIMIM announced its candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

Raj argued that AIMIM’s entry into the electoral field risks dividing secular votes, which could indirectly benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He urged Muslim voters to remain united and back parties committed to secular governance. His comments reflect a growing concern among opposition leaders about fragmentation within minority-dominated constituencies.

The appeal has sparked debate within political circles. Supporters of AIMIM say the party provides direct representation for Muslims who often feel sidelined by larger political formations. Critics, however, maintain that its presence weakens anti-BJP alliances and reduces the collective strength of secular forces.

Observers note that similar divisions in earlier elections helped the BJP gain ground in several states. The issue of “vote splitting” has long shaped discussions around minority representation in Indian politics.

AIMIM’s leadership has yet to respond to Raj’s remarks. Political analysts believe that the contest in Bihar will once again test whether identity-based parties or broader coalitions gain the trust of Muslim voters seeking effective political voice and security.
