New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning to students about the Institute of Management and Engineering in Delhi for offering unapproved degree programmes. The UGC clarified that the institute has no recognition under the UGC Act, 1956, and its degrees hold no academic or professional validity.
According to the latest advisory, the institute located in Kotla Mubarakpur, Delhi, is not established under any Central or State Act, nor is it recognised under Sections 2(f) or 3 of the UGC Act. This makes its operations illegal under Section 22, which governs the right to confer degrees in India.
The Commission also published a list of 22 fake universities currently operating in the country. Nine of these are based in Delhi and five in Uttar Pradesh, with the remaining institutions found in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Puducherry. Delhi remains the most affected due to its large student population and the presence of fraudulent educational brokers.
UGC officials warned that many of these institutions attract students with credible-sounding names and misleading phrases like “autonomous,” “internationally validated,” or “industry-affiliated.” They urged students to verify the legitimacy of universities through the official UGC portal before enrolling.
Experts said the persistence of fake universities reflects weak enforcement and low public awareness. UGC has made verification tools and the fake university list publicly available to prevent students from falling prey to fraudulent institutions.
