JPC’s Credibility Under Question, Says Maulana Mohammad Khalid Nadvi
New Delhi: The United Muslims of India (UMI) held a meeting at Daryaganj here, chaired by Maulana Mohammad Khalid Siddiqi Nadvi, to discuss pressing concerns regarding the recent Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. During the meeting, Maulana Nadvi expressed strong reservations about the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to oversee the bill. Since its establishment, he noted, the JPC has been marred by allegations of bias, with the chairman’s conduct and divisions among members bringing its impartiality into serious doubt.
Maulana Nadvi called for the immediate withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill to prevent potential misuse of the JPC by opportunists. He warned that, despite the government’s good intentions, the bill could lead to adverse effects on waqf properties and damage the administration’s reputation. According to him, UMI had already cautioned the government before the bill was tabled, aiming to avert any discord and ensure that the benefits of waqf properties continue to serve the Muslim community’s welfare. Maulana emphasised that waqf assets are, by Islamic law, dedicated for the welfare of the poor, orphans, widows, and the needy, and thus cannot be altered.
In addition to voicing concerns about the Waqf Amendment Bill, participants at the meeting also welcomed today’s Supreme Court decision regarding the Madrasa Board.
Participants included prominent figures such as Advocate Shah Jabeen Qazi, Maulana Mohammad Murtaza Dehlvi, Maulana Meraj Ahmad Nadvi, Dr. Altaf Ahmad, Dr. Abdul Hai Khan, Hakim Atta-ur-Rahman Ajmali, Hakim Aftab Alam, Mohammad Naseem, and Mohammad Imran Qanouji. The gathering concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Syed Ahmad Khan.
