Hyderabad: Nearly fifty close relatives of the pilgrims who died in the Umrah bus tragedy in Saudi Arabia are preparing to travel to the Kingdom for funeral rites. Telangana officials confirmed that Saudi authorities have preserved the bodies for mandatory DNA verification. The remains were charred in the explosion and fire, which makes identification through visual means impossible. Officials said the process is essential before issuing death certificates or allowing any legal procedure linked to the victims.
Authorities in Saudi Arabia will issue the certificates only after DNA matches are confirmed. The verification will allow families to proceed with insurance, compensation, and other claims. The Telangana government is coordinating with Saudi authorities to explore possible financial assistance from Riyadh. The state already announced an ex gratia of five lakh rupees for each affected family.
The Revenue Department will assist families with documentation and travel arrangements. The state government earlier said two relatives from each family would travel. Current estimates show almost fifty relatives are flying due to urgent humanitarian needs and identification requirements.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar said the death toll stands at forty five. He added that the final count depends on DNA confirmation. Officials said they are also considering a mass funeral in Saudi Arabia. The burial is expected to follow Islamic practice and Saudi Arabia’s time bound procedures for interment.
The Telangana government said full support will be provided. Officials said help will continue until all legal, financial, and administrative steps are complete.
