UN Security Council Condemns Pahalgam Attack, Calls for Accountability

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of at least 26 tourists and injured several others, reported the Hindu.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Council expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the governments of India and Nepal, as one of the deceased was a Nepalese citizen. Extending solidarity to the injured, the UNSC wished them a speedy and complete recovery.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, has triggered international outrage. The Council stressed that those responsible must be brought to justice, underscoring that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains one of the gravest threats to international peace and security. It emphasized that terrorist acts are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, location, or perpetrators.
Calling for global cooperation, the UNSC urged all states to actively support efforts to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of terrorism accountable, in line with their international obligations and relevant Security Council resolutions.
The Council reiterated the importance of combating terrorism by all lawful means, emphasizing adherence to the principles of the UN Charter and international law in the collective fight against global threats.
Meanwhile, the United Nations continues to closely monitor the situation in the region. During a regular press briefing in New York, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric appealed to both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation.
Tensions between the two nations have risen sharply following the attack. While India has not officially blamed any group or presented evidence implicating Pakistan, it has taken strong diplomatic measures, including announcing the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan—a crucial bilateral agreement governing water sharing. In response, Pakistan has threatened to withdraw from all bilateral agreements with India, including the 1972 Simla Agreement.
These developments signal a potentially dangerous phase in Indo-Pak relations, leading to renewed international calls for dialogue and de-escalation. The UNSC’s strong statement reflects growing global concern over the consequences of terrorism and highlights the urgent need for united action to prevent further violence.
