Varanasi: In a disturbing incident from Rajatalab area of Varanasi, a man dressed as a Kanwariya allegedly attempted to rape a Muslim girl who was alone at her home. The situation turned more violent when, instead of supporting the victim, a mob of Kanwar pilgrims reportedly attacked her house, vandalized property, and set parts of the home on fire, reported the Sadaa Times .
According to the victim, her brother was away on work, and she was studying in her family’s shop for an upcoming test when the accused entered in the guise of a Kanwariya and tried to sexually assault her.
“When I resisted, he began to beat me,” the girl said. “My grandmother rushed in upon hearing my screams, but he assaulted her as well.” She added that when she ran outside for help, the accused chased her, continuing to harass her.
The girl has pleaded for justice and called for immediate action against the accused.
Reports indicate that soon after the attempted assault, a large group of Kanwar pilgrims gathered and, in a shocking turn of events, attacked the house of the victim. The mob allegedly vandalized furniture and set parts of the house ablaze, causing panic and tension in the area.
Instead of supporting the victim, the attackers reportedly surrounded the local police station, demanding that the house of the Muslim girl be demolished with a bulldozer—a move echoing the controversial pattern of bulldozer politics in parts of Uttar Pradesh.
The incident has heightened communal tension in the area. No official confirmation has yet been given about arrests or legal action, but activists have condemned the violence and demanded justice for the victim.
