UP Police Restrictions on Eid Prayers Raise Concerns Over Selective Restrictions

Sambhal: Ahead of Eid, the police in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, have imposed strict regulations on Eid prayers and the use of loudspeakers. The Superintendent of Police announced that prayers will only be allowed at designated mosques and Eidgahs, with a complete ban on public prayers on roads and rooftops.
Additionally, authorities have planned increased deployment of police personnel and surveillance through CCTV and drones, particularly in “conflict-prone areas.”
During a peace committee meeting, CO Anuj Chaudhary, known for his controversial remarks during Holi, stated, “If you want to serve seviyan (vermicelli) on Eid, you must also eat gujiya on Holi.” His statement has sparked criticism, with many perceiving it as an imposition of cultural reciprocity on Muslims.
Earlier, Chaudhary had drawn backlash for stating, “There are 52 Fridays in a year, but Holi comes only once. If someone has problems with colors being thrown at them, they should stay indoors.”
Additional Superintendent of Police Shri Chandra emphasized that Eid prayers will only be allowed at traditional places, while rooftops and public gatherings will be restricted. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vandana Mishra reaffirmed that offering prayers on streets and the use of loudspeakers will be limited.
The move has raised concerns among activists and local Muslims, who argue that such restrictions selectively target Muslim religious practices. Critics view it as an attempt to curb Islamic traditions under the guise of maintaining law and order.
