UP Restores School Name After Backlash, Honors Martyr Veer Abdul Hamid

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Education Department changed the name of a school named after Veer Abdul Hamid, a 1965 war hero. The new name, “PM Shri Composite Vidyalaya Dhamopur,” sparked outrage. Critics called it an insult to a national hero.
Facing backlash, the department reversed its decision. The martyr’s family and political leaders condemned the name change. They called it disrespectful to Abdul Hamid’s sacrifice.
Veer Abdul Hamid’s grandson, Jameel Alam, was furious. He said the school was named to honor his grandfather’s sacrifice. He called the change arbitrary and disrespectful. Alam filed a complaint with the Ghazipur Basic Education Officer (BSA), demanding the original name be restored.
Ghazipur BSA officer Hemant Rao responded. The headmaster claimed Abdul Hamid’s name was not officially listed. Rao promised an investigation. He stressed the importance of honoring the martyr’s legacy.
Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi criticized the name change. He demanded the school continue to honor Abdul Hamid. He urged the government to preserve the tribute.
After public outrage, the education department reinstated the original name. Pratapgarhi expressed satisfaction, saying social media pressure forced the reversal.
He added that similar incidents had happened before. He demanded action against those responsible. He warned against dishonoring India’s brave soldiers.
