Churu: A lecture organised by the Language and Literature Club at Government Lohia College, Churu, on Thursday highlighted the significance of languages and their interconnections.

Presiding over the event, Professor Dr. Manju Sharma emphasised the collaborative efforts of the college’s four language departments – Urdu, Sanskrit, Hindi, and English – through formation of the Language and Literature Club. She stated that this initiative aims to promote linguistic and literary appreciation while fostering an understanding of relationships between various languages and their literature. Dr. Sharma said the initiative would not only benefit students academically but also deepen their cultural and intellectual engagement.

Dr. Shamshad Ali, Professor of Urdu, spoke about the rich knowledge traditions embedded in Indian literature. He traced the origins of Urdu to the Indian subcontinent and described it as the language of the common people of Hindustan. He remarked that Urdu is more commonly used in daily life by the general populace than Hindi, underscoring its accessibility and widespread appeal.

Professor H.R. Isran highlighted how the study of literature refines an individual’s personality, instils positive energy, and fosters excellence and enthusiasm. Using English literature as a lens, he analysed human nature and society, describing humans as the most complex creations, simultaneously easy and difficult to comprehend. Literature, he noted, unravels the layers of the human mind, offering insights into behaviour and emotions in various situations. He also discussed the interconnectedness of different languages and their literary traditions.

Professor Kamal Kothari delved into the profound aspects of Indian knowledge traditions, linking them with language, literature, culture, and history. He emphasised the universal human values of love, compassion, and harmony embedded in these traditions, which serve as a testament to India’s cultural superiority. He encouraged the assimilation of these values to enhance contemporary life and foster unity and compassion for all living beings.

The programme began with a welcome address by Professor Dr. Mulchand, who shared the club’s objective of introducing students to subject matter experts monthly to deepen their understanding of language and literature. The event was moderated by Professor Dr. Sanju Jhajhdiya, and attendees included Professor Javed Khan, Professor Dr. Sumer Singh, and postgraduate students of Urdu, Hindi, English, and Sanskrit.
