US Congressman Sparks Controversy with Anti-Muslim Remarks

Washington D.C.: Republican Representative Brandon Gill from Texas has drawn criticism for targeting American Muslims. The controversy began when journalist Mehdi Hasan shared a video highlighting that the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, allowing Muslims to play the call to prayer from mosques, just as Christians ring church bells. Gill responded by accusing Muslims of moving to the U.S. “en masse” to “fundamentally transform the landscape of American public life.”

Hasan pointed out that Gill’s xenophobic stance did not extend to his own wife, the daughter of Indian immigrant Dinesh D’Souza. Gill’s reaction confirmed his prejudice against Muslims. Observers noted this aligns with his history of Islamophobic remarks, including calling for the deportation of Muslim Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and criticizing Muslim mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani over cultural practices.

The Texas congressional district represented by Gill includes several mosques, including the Islamic Society of Denton. Experts warn that such statements undermine the principles of religious freedom enshrined in the Constitution. Civil rights advocates emphasized that American values require respect for diversity and protection of all communities.

Local leaders urged calm and reminded citizens that the First Amendment protects religious expression for all faiths. The episode sparked debate nationwide about rising Islamophobia in U.S. politics and the responsibility of elected officials to uphold constitutional rights.
