Washington: Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated after President Donald Trump ordered a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports, warning that any approaching Iranian vessels would be eliminated.
The blockade came into effect on Monday following failed talks between the two sides in Pakistan. The move has raised concerns about the stability of a fragile ceasefire reached earlier.
In a public statement, Trump claimed that most of Iran’s naval fleet had already been destroyed. He warned that remaining vessels, including fast attack ships, would face immediate action if they entered the blockade zone.
Iran strongly criticised the decision. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei described the move as harmful to the global economy. He questioned whether such actions would benefit any side. Iranian officials also called the blockade an act of piracy and vowed to defend their waters.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre stated that the blockade would apply to all ships linked to Iranian ports and oil facilities. This includes the entire Iranian coastline and energy infrastructure.
Despite a two week ceasefire agreement, shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz remains low. Iran has accused the United States of violating the truce by allowing continued attacks in Lebanon.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that the blockade would lead to higher fuel prices. Petrol prices in the United States have already crossed 4.12 dollars per gallon, rising from below 3 dollars before the conflict.
Pakistan has reaffirmed its role in mediation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that efforts for peace and stability will continue.
