US Reaffirms Commitment to Religious Freedom Amid Concerns over Treatment of Muslims in India

21 May 2024: In response to recent reports highlighting the challenges faced by the Muslim community in India, the United States has reiterated its dedication to promoting universal respect for freedom of religion. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of equal treatment for all religious communities, underscoring ongoing engagements with countries worldwide, including India, on this critical matter.

The statement follows the publication of a report by The New York Times titled “Strangers in Their Own Land: Being Muslim in Modi’s India,” which raised concerns about the erosion of secularism and democratic values under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The report depicted the struggles of Muslim families grappling with feelings of anguish and isolation in a society increasingly questioning their identity.

Furthermore, a recent report by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister revealed demographic shifts in India, with the Muslim population increasing from 9.84% to 14.09% between 1950 and 2015. Conversely, the share of the Hindu population decreased during the same period.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the findings of the EAC-PM report, refuting narratives of minority suppression and asserting that the perceived danger to minorities is unfounded. He urged a departure from misleading narratives and emphasized the need to accept factual realities. Many social analysts have rejected the findings of the EAC-PM report, asserting that the Muslim population has decreased during the given period.

However, skepticism persists, particularly regarding external assessments of India’s religious landscape. The Ministry of External Affairs dismissed a report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, labeling it biased and highlighting India’s pluralistic and democratic ethos.

Randhir Jaiswal, an MEA official spokesperson, criticized the USCIRF for its alleged political agenda and emphasized that it does not fully comprehend India’s diverse socio-cultural fabric.

As discussions surrounding religious freedom and minority rights continue, the reaffirmation of the US commitment to these principles underscores the global significance of upholding universal values. Dialogue and engagement remain essential in fostering understanding and promoting inclusive societies amidst evolving socio-political dynamics.
