Lucknow: Claims about a rise in the share of Muslim voters in Uttar Pradesh have sparked political debate ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The discussion follows the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, after which unofficial analyses began circulating about changes in the state’s voter composition.
Some reports claim the proportion of Muslim voters has increased from around 18.6 percent to nearly 19.5 percent. The same analyses also claim Muslims account for nearly 35 percent of newly registered voters. None of these figures have received official verification.
Election authorities have stated that voter records are not maintained on the basis of religion. State Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa said the Election Commission neither collects nor stores religious information of voters. He added that voter registration follows established procedures without classifying electors according to faith.
Officials also said complaints related to duplicate, suspicious or incorrect voter entries are examined under existing rules. Necessary action follows wherever required. They described revision of electoral rolls as a routine process aimed at improving accuracy and removing ineligible or duplicate registrations.
The debate has also included allegations of multiple voter identity numbers and registrations at different locations. Election authorities said such cases are investigated when identified. No official data has been released supporting broader claims about the scale of irregularities.
Election experts have urged caution while interpreting religion based estimates. They noted that the Election Commission does not publish voter data according to religious identity. As a result, community wise estimates rely on indirect calculations and demographic assumptions rather than official records.
Political observers said Muslim voters influence electoral outcomes in many Uttar Pradesh constituencies. They added that changes in voter rolls often attract attention because political parties closely monitor electoral trends before major elections.
