Muslim Organisations Oppose Uttarakhand Madrasa Bill, Plan Legal Challenge

New Delhi: Leading Muslim organisations have strongly opposed the proposed Uttarakhand madrasa legislation, calling it a direct violation of constitutional rights. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board and several national bodies issued a joint statement condemning the move.

The statement carries support from Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Majlis Ittehad-e-Millat, and Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith Hind. These groups argue that the bill mandates compulsory registration of madrasas under a government education board. It also grants authorities power to regulate religious content and fix curricula.

Leaders state that such provisions interfere with religious freedom. They referred to Articles 25 and 26, which protect the right to practice and manage religious affairs. They also cited Article 30, which secures the rights of minorities to run their own educational institutions.

The organisations described the bill as inconsistent with the principles of a secular state. They warned that it weakens the autonomy of Islamic seminaries. According to the statement, the move forms part of a wider pattern aimed at limiting independent religious education.

Legal proceedings related to the issue are already underway in the Uttarakhand High Court. The groups confirmed that they will approach the Supreme Court if required. They urged the Muslim community to remain aware and united in defending constitutional protections.

The development has raised concerns among educators and community leaders. Many view the bill as a test case for the future of minority-run institutions in India.
