Mohammad Shakeel Qaiser, a revered former Senior Staff Photographer at Khaleej Times, passed away at 9:45 AM on April 29, 2025. Renowned for his exceptional photojournalism spanning nearly three decades, Qaiser’s work captured pivotal moments across the UAE and the broader Gulf region.
Joining Khaleej Times in the mid-1980s, Qaiser quickly became known for his dynamic sports photography, notably chronicling cricket legends like Wasim Akram during the Sharjah tournaments of the early 1990s. His dedication extended beyond sports; Qaiser covered significant events, including conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, consistently delivering compelling visuals under challenging circumstances.
In the 1980s, Qaiser faced a life-threatening battle with leukemia. Despite a grim prognosis, he underwent a successful bone marrow transplant in the UK, thanks to the unwavering support of his family and the generosity of benefactors moved by his story. Remarkably, Qaiser continued his photographic pursuits throughout his treatment, exemplifying resilience and passion for his craft.
