Vijayan Says Centre Treats Muslims as Second Class Citizens, Warns of Deepening Insecurity

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the BJP led Union government of treating Muslims as second class citizens and pushing minority communities to the margins of public life. He said recent policies and laws have created fear and insecurity among Muslims across India.

Speaking at the conclusion of the Kerala Yatra organised by the Kerala Muslim Jamaat, Vijayan said several decisions of the central government aim to isolate minorities and weaken faith in the Constitution. He said such actions erode the idea of equal citizenship.

The Kerala Yatra, led by senior Muslim scholar A P Abubacker Musliyar, began from Kasargod on January 1 and concluded in the state capital. The programme focused on unity, constitutional values, and opposition to communal politics.

Vijayan referred to the Citizenship Act and proposed changes to the Waqf Act. He said these measures make Muslims feel excluded and treated as outsiders. He warned that laws framed without trust damage social harmony.

He also cited reports from BJP ruled states where Muslims face intimidation, humiliation, and violence linked to religious identity. He referred to incidents where leaders linked to Hindutva groups openly issued threats and promoted violence. He said mob lynching, hate speeches, and public threats now appear with alarming frequency. Silence from authorities encourages such acts.

Vijayan said opposition parties raised these issues repeatedly and public anger surfaces during elections. People question the failure to protect minorities and the absence of punishment for hate driven actions.

He warned that attacks on Muslim and Christian places of worship reflect a planned politics of division. Recalling Kerala’s experience, he said firm government action prevented communal violence. He urged citizens to remain alert and resist hatred through unity and constitutional commitment. Leaders of the Kerala Muslim Jamaat said the yatra aimed to reassure Muslims and reaffirm equality promised by the Constitution.
