Violence Erupts Again in Tripura, Mosque Targeted in Fresh Clashes

Violence has flared up once again, this time in the Pekuchera and Panisagar areas of North Tripura, following the recent unrest in Kadamtala. In response, mobile internet services have been suspended in the region, and Bhanuprad Swami, the Superintendent of Police for North Tripura, has been transferred. The unrest reportedly began on October 15, 2024, when news surfaced of damage to a Shiva temple. This incident was followed by an attack on a mosque complex, intensifying tensions.

In a notification issued by Tripura’s Home Secretary, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Sahni, it was announced that due to communal tensions in certain areas of North Tripura, internet services would be suspended for the next 72 hours under Section 52 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885.

According to reports from the Indian Express, when asked about the mosque attack, the SP confirmed, “A building within the mosque complex sustained minor damage. It was not yet a designated prayer hall, but it was located in the prayer complex. Security forces have been deployed, and the situation is under control.”

In Kadamtala, police resorted to using batons and non-lethal force to disperse crowds as tensions escalated.

The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of Tripura, in a statement, expressed concern over the situation. “Kadamtala is still reeling from last week’s communal violence, which destroyed homes, livelihoods, and religious sites. Now, we hear of another disturbing incident of communal unrest near Panisagar in North Tripura. This cycle of violence and hatred is tearing apart the social fabric of our society.”

The situation remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments and maintaining a heavy security presence to prevent further escalation.
