Murshidabad, West Bengal – A protest demanding the withdrawal of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill turned violent in Murshidabad as clashes broke out between the police and demonstrators. According to reports, angry protestors allegedly attacked and set fire to several police vehicles. Stones were also hurled, and widespread vandalism was reported.
The protest began as a peaceful march from the Jangipur PWD ground, organized by members of the minority community. However, when the march headed towards Umarpur intending to block National Highway-12, the police intervened, leading to heated clashes. In the chaos that followed, police vehicles were torched, and houses in Baniyapur and Umarpur also witnessed destruction. Police forces had to retreat temporarily before reinforcements led by the Jangipur OC and the District Superintendent of Police arrived to regain control.
