Manipur witnessed fresh violence on the first day of “free movement” after months of ethnic unrest, as a public bus was attacked in the Kangpokpi area. Following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive to ensure unrestricted movement while taking strict action against disruptors, security forces intervened to disperse a stone-pelting mob using tear gas and baton charges, leaving some demonstrators injured.
Despite tensions, inter-district bus services resumed under tight security, with buses departing from Imphal airport towards Churachandpur and Senapati districts. While the Churachandpur-bound bus traveled safely through Bishnupur, the Senapati-bound bus faced no obstructions up to Kanglatongbi.
Meanwhile, security forces arrested seven individuals linked to banned militant groups, including the Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) and Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL). Arrests took place in Lamphel, Imphal West, and near the India-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district, leading to the seizure of Rs 50,000. Among those detained were Moirangthem Jiban Singh (27), Laishram Tiken Singh (40), and Thoudam Premkumar Singh (38).
Additionally, security forces recovered 114 weapons, including grenades, IEDs, and ammunition, across multiple districts, including Bishnupur, Senapati, and Imphal East. The administration had earlier set a two-week deadline for surrendering looted and illegal weapons without penalty. Authorities have urged all stakeholders to support ongoing peace efforts to restore communal harmony.
