Students Protest at VIT Bhopal After Jaundice Outbreak and Campus Safety Concerns

Bhopal: A large protest erupted at VIT University Bhopal late Tuesday night after students reported a rising number of jaundice cases on campus. Students alleged unhygienic conditions and contaminated water. They said the administration failed to act despite repeated complaints over the past weeks.

Local police sources said around two dozen students reported jaundice symptoms recently. Students gathered in large numbers on the campus and demanded immediate medical checks, safe drinking water, and clearer communication from university authorities. The protest soon intensified as nearly 4,000 students assembled near the main block. Several vehicles were set on fire. The chancellor’s bungalow was damaged during the unrest.

Students said their safety concerns had been ignored. Many said they lost trust in the administration after seeing more students fall ill. They also said the university needed to review its water supply, increase testing, and share health updates with transparency. Several students said they saw no emergency response team on time during the initial outbreak.

Police teams entered the campus to bring the situation under control. Officials said they were assessing the damage and would record statements from students and staff. They said the focus was on restoring order and ensuring health checks for affected students.

The incident has raised questions about campus health standards. Parents of students contacted university officials on Wednesday morning and sought clear updates about the medical response and safety measures. Students said they expect the administration to release water quality reports and provide long term solutions to prevent future outbreaks.
