Waqf Amendment Bill a Larger Strategy to Undermine Waqf Boards and Seize Control of Waqf Properties: Inamur Rahman

New Delhi, Aug 30: Inamur Rahman, Assistant Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, delivered a critique of the newly proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, raising concerns about its motivations, the creation process, and its potential consequences for the Muslim community. Speaking at an online meeting on “Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, Effects and Challenges” for JIH Maharashtra office bearers on Wednesday, he highlighted the bill’s perceived flaws, including the lack of genuine consultation, procedural irregularities, and potential negative impacts on Waqf properties and Muslim institutions.

Mr. Rahman questioned the legitimacy of the bill, noting the absence of meaningful consultation with key stakeholders, including Waqf Board members and various Muslim organizations. He also pointed out deviations from standard procedures, citing the non-functional status of Central Waqf Council as a significant concern.

Providing a historical overview of Waqf laws in India, Mr. Rahman expressed concern that the proposed amendments could reverse the progress made in protecting Waqf properties. He suggested that the bill, driven by external forces, might be part of a strategy to undermine Waqf Boards and seize control of Waqf properties.

He also criticized a negative campaign against Waqf Boards, which he argued was based on inflated and misleading statistics. Mr. Rahman expressed concern over the growing influence of non-Muslims in Waqf Boards, fearing this could lead to the misuse of Waqf properties and divisions within the Muslim community.

Mr. Rahman called for greater transparency, accountability, and genuine consultation with the Muslim community before any amendments to the Waqf Act. He urged vigilance and unity in protecting Waqf properties. The program was moderated by JIH Maharashtra Secretary, Abdul Mujeeb Shaikh.
