Lucknow: Muslim property owners have welcomed the government’s decision to extend the deadline for Waqf registration on the UMEED portal by three months. The move comes after months of complaints about technical glitches, server failures, and delays that slowed the registration of sacred Waqf lands.
Many users reported that the portal frequently crashed. This forced applicants to spend long hours at registration centers and wait until late at night to upload documents. The delay created widespread concern among property holders seeking legal recognition for their land.
Large gaps in registration remain. Reports show that nearly 70 percent of Waqf properties are still not registered. The Sunni Waqf Board in Uttar Pradesh owns about 1.26 billion acres. Only 45,574 of its properties are recorded so far. The Shia Waqf Board owns 15,386 properties, with only 2,909 registered.
Property owners in Lucknow said the extension gives them a chance to complete pending work without the pressure of the earlier deadline. Imran Qureshi, who has been trying to register his land, said he felt relief because the extra time will help him submit all documents smoothly. Another applicant, Shazia Ansari, said the frequent server failures made the process stressful.
Officials said the extension is meant to clear the backlog. They urged applicants to use the additional time to complete their entries. Clerics and community groups praised the decision. They said it supports protection of Muslim heritage and legal rights linked to Waqf properties.
The extended window is expected to raise registration numbers across several states and ensure clearer documentation of Waqf assets.
