Welfare Party of India Improves Performance in Kerala Local Body Polls

The Welfare Party of India (WPI) has recorded a steady rise in its electoral performance in Kerala’s recently concluded rural and urban local body elections, increasing both its seat tally and vote margins compared to previous polls. The party fielded around 400 candidates across the state, of which 75 were elected, including 52 women candidates.

The results mark a continued upward trajectory for the WPI, which had won 65 seats in the 2020 local body elections and 41 seats in 2015. Of the 75 seats secured this time, three are from Block Panchayats, 56 from Gram Panchayats, and 16 from municipal councils, representing a net gain of 10 seats from the previous term.

Despite facing strong opposition from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the WPI managed not only to consolidate its independent presence but also to play a significant role in strengthening the United Democratic Front (UDF) through electoral cooperation in several local bodies. Traditionally, the LDF has enjoyed an advantage in local body elections across Kerala. However, in this election cycle, UDF candidates, supported by WPI, secured a majority in multiple councils.

Throughout the campaign, the ruling front alleged that the WPI enjoyed backing from Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and attempted to portray the party as a “communal force.” These allegations, however, appeared to have limited impact on the electorate, as the WPI improved its overall performance and vote margins in several regions.

In Mukkom municipality, the WPI contested independently in six wards after alliance negotiations with the UDF failed due to local political considerations. Of the 34 seats in the municipal council, four WPI candidates were elected. In comparison, the party had contested four wards in the 2020 elections in alliance with the UDF and won three.

The grassroots-level tie-up between the WPI and the UDF had also drawn opposition from both EK and AP factions of Samastha. Despite this resistance, the election results indicate that the cooperation benefited the UDF in key areas, contributing to its overall performance.

A notable highlight of the elections was the victory of WPI candidate Tahira Salman from the Cheria Kumblam ward in Chingrot Gram Panchayat. Among the total 17,300 contestants across the state, she registered the highest victory margin. Out of 1,220 votes polled in her ward, Tahira Salman secured 1,021 votes, underscoring strong local support.

Party leaders described the results as an endorsement of their political approach and grassroots engagement, particularly the increased representation of women. Political observers note that the WPI’s consistent gains over successive local body elections signal its growing relevance in Kerala’s political landscape, especially as a supporting force in opposition alliances.

With local body governance playing a crucial role in development and welfare delivery, the improved performance of smaller parties like the WPI is expected to influence political alignments and decision-making at the grassroots level in the coming years.
