Hate Speech Video and Local Tensions Surface Amid Bengal Election Outcome

Kolkata: Reports from West Bengal pointed to rising polarisation, local clashes, and hate speech targeting minority communities during the Assembly election outcome.

A video circulated on social media showed a man identified as Ankit Tiwari making violent remarks. In the footage, he accused political workers of killings and called for retaliation after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s rise in the state. He urged continued attacks and openly called for violence against Muslims across age groups, including children and elderly persons, along with religious figures. The message framed violence as revenge and encouraged escalation.

The video spread widely and drew attention to the tone of public discourse during the election period. Observers linked such rhetoric to an increase in fear among minority communities and a strain on social harmony.

Tensions also appeared on the ground in parts of the state. In Islampur, reports stated that a road named Masjid Para Road was renamed as Netaji Palli Road during counting day celebrations on May 4. Visuals showed a group of people climbing onto the signboard structure with party flags. One individual used a hammer to remove the existing nameplate.

Participants at the site stated that the renaming reflected their claim over the region and referred to Subhas Chandra Bose in support of the change.

These developments occurred alongside reports of scattered incidents of unrest in different areas. The situation highlights concerns over law and order and the safety of minority communities during periods of political transition.
