Where Faith Meets Leadership: The National Summit of JIH Arkan

A Journey of Prayers, Persistence, and Participation

– Syed Azharuddin

When I first heard about the All India Arkan Ijtima, I was outside India, far from the action and preparations. It felt like a distant dream to attend the event. Yet, deep within, I held onto hope and prayed earnestly to Almighty Allah, asking Him to pave a way for me.

Months passed, and to my surprise, an opportunity arose – a business tour to India. While I initially planned for a brief stay, unforeseen circumstances extended my visit. This extension transformed into an exploration of new business ventures, and soon, my travels brought me to Goa.

In the midst of this, however, a sense of guilt weighed heavily on me. The Ijtima – a historic and monumental gathering – was in full swing, and I felt like an outsider, detached from contributing to this momentous occasion. My past in the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) had been marked by active involvement in every major event, whether at the state or national level. But now, I found myself unable to make a meaningful contribution, which left me uneasy.

One day, unexpectedly, I was added to a WhatsApp group and shortly after received a call inviting me to contribute to the RIFAH Expo, the first national expo of its kind being organised on such a grand scale. That call lifted a burden off my heart – I finally felt I had a way to contribute. I immersed myself in the preparations, particularly in designing marketing materials for the expo.

Soon, I found myself deeply involved in another crucial task: preparing the Idraak Tahreeki showcase for the JIH Telangana Stall. This opportunity rekindled my sense of purpose, reminding me that even when the path seems uncertain, Allah’s plans are always perfect.

Shaping Leadership: The Legacy of All India Arkan Ijtima

The All India Arkan Ijtima is steeped in a profound historical legacy. It has always been a cornerstone for nurturing the personalities of its cadre, encompassing a multitude of dimensions that shape them into well-rounded leaders. Through meticulously crafted sessions, the Ijtima addresses critical aspects such as Foundational and Ideological Strengthening, Unity and Organisational Development, Personality Development and Spiritual Growth, and Mobilisation for Socio-Political Cause.

These gatherings are not just about discussions; they are a transformative experience for the Arkan – those select and pious individuals who are entrusted with leadership roles in their families, communities, and professions, directly or indirectly. They are the torchbearers of moral and social guidance, aptly described as the leaders of society.

This year, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind decided to host its 5th All India Arkan Ijtima in the vibrant city of Hyderabad, spanning three days from 15th to 17th November 2024. The event concluded on a high note, with renewed vows to uphold their mission, heartfelt prayers, and emotional farewells. The sheer magnitude of the gathering was awe-inspiring, with over 20,000 attendees, including the families of several esteemed leaders.

The Ijtima was not just a meeting; it was a celebration of commitment, a renewal of purpose, and a testament to the enduring legacy of the Jamaat.

Unique Aspects of the All India Arkan Ijtima 2024

The 2024 All India Arkan Ijtima was a remarkable event filled with profound experiences, emotional connections, and thought-provoking initiatives. Here are the standout features that made this gathering truly special:

  1. A Journey from Volunteer to Rukn

Reflecting on the 2015 Ijtima in Hyderabad, where I served as a volunteer amidst 12,000-15,000 attendees, the 2024 event felt like a personal milestone. This time, as a member (Rukn), I witnessed the scale grow to a gathering of 20,000-25,000, including volunteers, dependents, and visitors. Special prayers are due for Abdul Jabbar Siddique Sahab and his team, who managed the logistics with such precision and excellence.

  1. A Family Affair: Engaging My Loved Ones

This Ijtima wasn’t just about my personal involvement. I decided to bring my family, ensuring they felt part of Tahreek-e-Islami Hind. After heartfelt discussions, I convinced my wife and mother, and seeing my children enjoy and engage deeply was heart-warming. I pray that this experience leaves an everlasting spiritual and ideological impact on their lives, In Sha Allah.

  1. Dome of Al-Aqsa: A Symbol of Commitment

A poignant feature of the Ijtima was the Namaz Lawn and a beautifully crafted replica of the Dome of Al-Aqsa. This symbolic installation reminded attendees of the ongoing struggle for Masjid Al-Aqsa and the sacrifices made for Palestine, the blessed land of the Prophets. It strengthened our collective commitment to this cause.

  1. Post-Office of History

A uniquely designed Post-Office paid tribute to the 1981 memorial event led by Moulana Abdul Aziz (RA), founder of Wadi-e-Huda. Letters from embassies, ministries, and governors were displayed, inspiring cadres to dedicate themselves to societal betterment. This initiative served as a bridge between the past and present, fostering a sense of purpose in the attendees.

  1. A Spiritual Landscape

The Ijtima grounds were adorned with a stunning waterfall and vibrant, colorful lights, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Quranic words, beautifully written in calligraphy on small mountains, encouraged attendees to reflect and strengthen their connection with Allah. It was a harmonious blend of natural beauty and divine inspiration.

  1. A Living Example of Equality

The Ijtima stood as a beacon of unity and equality. Despite regional, linguistic, or economic differences, everyone – from cadre to national leaders – shared the same meals, queued together, and displayed a spirit of humility. The organising team’s efforts to cater to diverse dietary preferences with five food stalls while maintaining equality set a powerful example for young attendees.

  1. Literature: The Lifeline of Ideological Growth

The lifeblood of any ideological movement lies in its literature, and this was evident in the Ijtima. Publishers outnumbered food stalls, showcasing a wide array of books for men, women, youth, and children. New releases further enriched the intellectual atmosphere. Deep respect goes out to the authors, publishers, and their teams for their invaluable contributions.

  1. Engaging the Next Generation

Over 500 children participated in the Ijtima, with dedicated sessions organised by the Children’s Islamic Organization (CIO) and JIH’s women’s wing. My children thoroughly enjoyed the activities, expressing eagerness to attend future events. Such efforts sow the seeds of faith and activism in the younger generation, ensuring a bright future for the movement.

  1. Honouring the Legacy of JIH

Displays throughout the campus highlighted the lives and contributions of individuals who built JIH into the impactful organisation it is today. Their sacrifices inspired attendees, particularly the youth, to emulate their commitment to the Prophet Muhammad’s (ﷺ) path. Special prayers were offered for these trailblazers and their enduring impact on society.

  1. RIFAH Expo: A Hub for Entrepreneurs

The RIFAH Expo was a standout feature, with over 180 business stalls offering a platform for entrepreneurs to expand their ventures nationally and globally. The event, attended by top businessmen, influential personalities, and thousands of visitors, set a benchmark for future expos. Kudos to Mr. Syed Yusuf Ali and the RIFAH team for this ground-breaking initiative.

  1. Idraak – Tahreek Showcase: The Crown Jewel

The most unique part of the Ijtima was the Idraak Tahreek Showcase, which highlighted 50+ unique projects run by JIH across the nation. This smartly curated space provided a comprehensive view of the organisation’s efforts, sister organisations, and activities in various states. Special commendation to Mr. Ateeq Ur Rahman and the organising team for this unparalleled presentation.

  1. A Heartfelt Reunion of SIO Cadre at the Arkan Ijtima

The All India Arkan Ijtima was not just a gathering of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind members but a heartfelt reunion of SIO cadre from across the nation. With nearly 60% of JIH leadership at all levels emerging from the SIO, the event reflected the profound influence of this vibrant youth movement. It inspired hope that by the next Ijtima, this figure could reach 100%, In Sha Allah.

Rameez EK (President, SIO of India) aptly noted that many thriving JIH units owe their existence to SIO cadre, who now form the backbone of the organisation. The event served as both a networking hub and a reunion, rekindling bonds forged during youth. The presence of women Arkan from GIO (Girls Islamic Organisation) backgrounds was equally inspiring. As highlighted by Sumayya Roshan (President, National Federation of GIO), these women are now leading impactful, women-focused initiatives within JIH.

Personally, it was a mix of joy and longing. While I met over 1,000 fellow Arkan, time constraints prevented me from meeting many others. This Ijtima was a powerful testament to the lasting legacy of SIO and GIO, celebrating unity and leadership while reinforcing the spirit of community and purpose for future generations.

  1. A Peaceful and Harmonious Environment

One of the most remarkable aspects of the entire event was the absence of any disputes, complaints, or negative atmosphere. Even the police officers assigned to ensure security and manage traffic were seen sitting idle, reading books from the book stalls, visiting the Idraak display – particularly the APCR (Association for Protection of Civil Rights) – and engaging in humble discussions with the Arkan. It was as if, for those three days, they were no longer on duty. The disciplined and well-mannered Arkan of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind had created an environment so peaceful that there was no need for any intervention. All of this was made possible by the tireless efforts of the volunteers, whose hard work and humility were a true testament to the values instilled in them. A big salute to these volunteers and their parents, who nurtured them to serve people across India as if they were their own guests.

  1. Building Inclusivity, Empowering Women, and Strengthening New Arkan
  2. Inclusive Messaging Across All Age Groups: It would be beneficial to ensure that the messages delivered during speeches and sessions resonate with all age groups – youth, adults, and elders alike. This approach reinforces the idea of unity within the Tahreek, transcending generational boundaries. Emphasising inclusivity avoids any unintended segregation and ensures that everyone feels equally valued and engaged.
  3. Orientation and Training for New Arkan: Proper orientation and training for new Arkan are essential to help them align with the values and ethos of the Tahreek. This includes guidance on their behaviour and active participation during important events like the Ijtima, fostering a sense of belonging and professionalism.
  4. Enhanced Focus on Women-Centric Initiatives: There is a need to incorporate more structured initiatives and content that specifically address women’s roles, challenges, and contributions. Empowering women through dedicated sessions and messaging will enable them to become stronger and more active participants in the mission of the Tahreek.

A Vision for Action: The Call to RISE with جرأت (Courage)

The conclusion of the All India Arkan Ijtima was marked by an inspiring and transformative message from Janab Syed Sadatullah Husaini, President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. Known for his piety, humility, and kind-hearted leadership, he left a lasting impression on all attendees through his heartfelt guidance. Addressing two distinct audiences – one during the Cadre Convention Session with over 25,000 participants and another exclusively for the Arkan – he presented two empowering slogans that encapsulate the spirit of the Ijtima.

A Slogan for the Cadre: RISE

In his address to the national cadre during the Cadre Convention, he introduced the acronym RISE, a rallying call to action that embodies the mission and vision of JIH:

  • R: Reach Out to All – Engage with every section of society, fostering inclusion and unity.
  • I: Individual Contribution – Recognise that every individual effort counts in creating a collective impact.
  • S: Shift Public Opinion – Work towards influencing societal narratives for justice and equity.
  • E: Engagement with All Muslims – Strengthen bonds and cooperation within the community to achieve shared goals.

This simple yet profound acronym served as a unifying message, inspiring cadre to be proactive, purposeful, and steadfast in their journey toward a just society.

A Slogan for the Arkan: جرأت (Courage)

For the Arkan, the esteemed leaders and moral compass of the Muslim community, جرأت was introduced as the guiding principle for their actions. This acronym highlights the essential virtues required to uphold justice and equity:

  • ج: جدوجہد (Struggle) – Persevere in the face of challenges and obstacles.
  • ر: رفاقت (Companionship) – Cultivate strong bonds of brotherhood and solidarity.
  • أ: استقامت (Steadfastness) – Remain unwavering in faith and commitment to the cause.
  • ت: تربیت (Personality Development) – Continuously strive for self-improvement and nurture others.

This powerful message for the Arkan emphasised that their role is not just about leadership but about embodying these values to inspire and guide the community effectively.

The Central Theme: Justice and Equity

At the heart of both slogans lies the Qur’anic command:

كُونُوا۟ قَوَّٰمِينَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ

“Rise up for justice and equity”

The take away message, reminded the attendees that these values – RISE and جرأت – are not abstract ideals but practical principles for collective action. They serve as a roadmap for building a just society rooted in the teachings of Islam. The message was both a call to introspection and a challenge to act, leaving every attendee motivated to contribute meaningfully to their community and nation.

Together, these guiding slogans captured the essence of the Ijtima’s purpose: to inspire, unite, and empower individuals and leaders to rise above challenges and work collectively toward a brighter, just, and equitable future.

What inspired me to write this article?

To me, the All India Arkan Programme of JIH is much more than an event; it feels like a National Leadership Summit for Indian Muslims. It is a rare and unparalleled gathering where visionary wisdom converges with strategic action, providing a platform for reflection, collaboration, and growth. This programme exemplifies the essence of leadership grounded in faith, where the profound teachings of Islam inspire a sense of duty and responsibility toward societal transformation.

Here, individuals from diverse backgrounds – scholars, professionals, community leaders, and changemakers – unite under a shared mission. The Ijtima becomes a beacon of hope, illuminating the path forward for Indian Muslims while nurturing a culture of unity, selflessness, and service. It is a place where faith is not just practised but actively mobilised to tackle the pressing challenges of our time.

This convergence of spirituality and strategy makes the All India Arkan Ijtima an event unlike any other – a space where every participant leaves not just inspired but equipped to lead their communities with integrity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice and equity. It is truly a testament to what a unified and purpose-driven community can achieve.

At last, I pray for Shakir Hussain Sahab, a humble and pious soul and Rukn, who left this temporary world during the programme. I also pray for all the leaders who attended previous events but were not present this time. Additionally, I pray for all the senior Arkan whose contributions have been instrumental in making Jamaat-e-Islami Hind such a powerful and impactful force in society.
