Woman in Coma After Scooter Accident; Husband Charged Following Pothole Incident

Indore: A tragic accident has left a 23-year-old woman, Shanu Gaur, in a coma after she and her husband, Ravi Gaur, fell into a large pothole while riding a scooter on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) road in the MIG area of Indore. The incident has sparked controversy, leading police to file an FIR against Ravi Gaur for allegedly endangering safety while driving, reported The Times of India.

Both Shanu and Ravi were injured in the accident, with Shanu sustaining a severe head injury that worsened at the hospital, resulting in her current condition. Following the accident, police registered a case against Ravi under sections 125 (endangering life or personal safety) and 281 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhinay Vishwakarma stated that preliminary investigations suggest Ravi was driving recklessly, noting that other vehicles managed to navigate the same stretch safely. He indicated that the Indore Municipal Corporation would be contacted to address the pothole issue to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The decision to charge Ravi has faced backlash from local politicians and residents who argue that the poor condition of the road should also be considered a significant factor in the accident. Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla condemned the police’s actions, calling for departmental accountability for what he termed an “unjust step.”

“This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers posed by poor road conditions. We urge authorities to investigate thoroughly and ensure that those responsible for maintaining the roads are held accountable,” said BJP spokesperson Narendra Saluja, who also assured that repair and maintenance work would commence soon as the monsoon season concludes.

The incident underscores the pressing need for improved road safety measures in Indore, particularly in light of the heavy rainfall that has contributed to the deterioration of local infrastructure.
