Work to Begin Soon on Hyderabad Metro Corridor in Old City

Hyderabad: The work on Hyderabad Metro Rail in the Old City is set to begin soon with the Hyderabad District Collector finalising the rate at which properties will be acquired for widening of roads.

The Collector has fixed Rs.81,000 per square yard for properties to be acquired for the Metro corridor from Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta. The property owners will also be paid the construction value of the structures.

According to the Collector, an agreement has been reached after discussions with many of the property owners to pay Rs.81,000 per square yard and the construction value. The house owners will be paid the compensation within 10 days of their consent.

Following demands from various quarters, the government has increased the rate from Rs.65,000 per square yard to Rs.81,000.

Hyderabad Airport Metro Rail (HAMR) Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy said the land acquisition for Metro works in the Old City has been expedited.

He said some property owners had already given their consent for acquisition of their properties.

Last week, Reddy had said that as many as 1,100 properties are likely to be affected by Metro works in the old city.

Requisitions for 900 properties have already been submitted to the district collector under the Land Acquisition Act. Preliminary notifications have also been issued for 800 properties in phases, while 400 properties have received preliminary declaration.

Compensation awards for 200 affected properties are expected to be finalised by the end of December, after which payments will be disbursed, and demolition work will commence, he said.

He reiterated that all religious and historical structures would be preserved using engineering solutions.

Reddy said that the Metro’s arrival would transform the Old City into an attractive destination, boosting employment opportunities and driving sustainable, pollution-free development.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is keen on taking up Metro work in the Old City at the earliest.

Last month, NVS Reddy had said that work on the second phase of Hyderabad Metro Rail will be launched in January.

Though the Telangana government is waiting for the Centre’s nod for five corridors of 76.4 km, which is estimated to cost Rs.24,269 crore, the special purpose vehicle of the state government is set to undertake the work on the Old City Corridor.

A major portion of this 7.5 km long corridor from MGBS to Chandrayangutta was originally planned under the first phase but could not be taken up due to various issues.

A total of 54 stations are planned in the second phase, including six stations on MGBS-Chandrayangutta corridor.

None of the 106 religious and heritage structures along the proposed route in the Old City will be demolished.
