Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has defended a controversial remark made by a police officer in Sambhal, stating that while Holi is celebrated once a year, Friday prayers take place every week.
During an address at the India Today conclave, Adityanath acknowledged the statement made by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anuj Chaudhary and remarked that the officer may have spoken in the manner of a “pehalwan” (wrestler).
The controversy arose during a peace committee meeting held at the Sambhal Kotwali police station on March 6. The meeting was convened to ensure communal harmony, as Holi, which falls on March 14 this year, coincides with Friday prayers during Ramadan.
Addressing the gathering, DSP Anuj Chaudhary advised Muslim residents to remain indoors if they were uncomfortable with Holi colors while heading for prayers. “The festival of colors comes only once a year, whereas Friday prayers take place 52 times annually. If my Muslim brothers feel that getting color on them while going for namaz is an ungodly act, they should stay indoors until Holi celebrations on the streets subside,” Chaudhary stated.
The remark sparked discussions, with some questioning the appropriateness of such advice from a law enforcement officer. However, Adityanath’s endorsement of the statement has further fueled the debate, with critics arguing that it undermines the secular ethos of the police force.
The controversy comes amid heightened communal sensitivities during the festive period, prompting authorities to emphasize the need for maintaining peace and mutual respect.
