Sambhal: Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Zia-ur-Rahman Barq, has reignited debate over the national song Vande Mataram, stating that not singing it does not diminish his patriotism. He asserted that while Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem and is sung with respect, Vande Mataram is not binding upon citizens.
Responding to comments by SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi, who also declined to sing the song, Barq said he shares his grandfather and former MP Shafiqur Rehman Barq’s position on the issue. “My grandfather always opposed singing Vande Mataram, and I have never sung it either. No one can question my love for the country because of that,” he said.
Barq clarified that his objection is based on faith, explaining that parts of Vande Mataram conflict with Islamic teachings. “We respect the national anthem and sing it wholeheartedly, but Vande Mataram includes expressions that go against our religion. We love our country, but we cannot worship the land,” he said.
He emphasised that the Constitution grants every citizen the right to practise their religion freely and that refusing to sing the national song falls within that right. “Our loyalty to India is unquestionable. Muslims have sacrificed for the country’s freedom, and no one should doubt our patriotism,” he said.
Barq’s statement comes as Vande Mataram marks 150 years since its composition, sparking renewed debate on the intersection of faith and national identity.
