San Juan: New York City’s first Muslim mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, attended Friday prayers at Centro Islamico del Caribe–Masjid Ebadur Rahman in San Juan during his recent trip to Puerto Rico. His visit reflected both personal faith and commitment to community service as he spent time praying, engaging with the local Muslim community, and helping distribute meals to the needy after Jumuah.
Speaking briefly at the mosque, Mamdani quoted Malcolm X, reminding worshippers that presence at the table of power must translate into shared prosperity. “Sitting at the table does not make you a diner,” he said. “You have to be eating some of what’s on that plate.” He urged Muslims to reflect on their divine responsibilities, help those around them, and work toward improving society.
Mamdani’s Puerto Rico trip coincided with the annual Somos conference, a gathering of New York’s political leaders and community organizers. Mamdani emphasized the deep historic ties between New York and Puerto Rico. “You cannot tell the story of New York City without telling the story of Puerto Rico,” he said, highlighting the shared struggles for affordability and justice.
After his electoral victory, Mamdani pledged an agenda focused on affordable housing, universal childcare, and higher wages. His actions in Puerto Rico, blending prayer, service, and advocacy, reinforced his message of unity and inclusion. His Jumuah attendance and charitable outreach underscored the importance of faith as a force for social good.
