The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), a part of the Indian government’s Department of Space, has given the green light to AMU’s proposal to develop its first satellite. This pioneering satellite is dedicated to the memory of the university’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. This achievement represents a significant step forward for AMU in the field of space exploration and satellite technology.
The satellite, officially named “SS AMU SAT” is a project that has been in the making since November 2021, initiated by the AMU Robo Club. This nanosatellite, which falls under the category of a 3U CubeSat, serves various purposes, including economic growth analysis in India’s most underprivileged regions through satellite imagery. Additionally, it aims to implement an in-house image compression technology for faster multimedia transmission and undertake extensive testing of various in-house built sub-systems.
After AMU submitted its project to IN-SPACe for approval, registration, frequency allocation, and the all-important launch of SS AMU SAT, it received approval with one vital condition: AMU must enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IN-SPACe, covering all aspects from satellite development to its launch into the Lower Earth Orbit.
Chairman of the Department of Electronics Engineering, Prof Ekram Khan is leading the project with a team of students supported by CA Prabhakar, a former Project Director at ISRO, and Faraz Ahmad, an alumnus from the 2013 batch. Technical support for the project has also come from AMU alumni currently working with ISRO, as well as experts from various industries across the globe.
