Calcutta HC expresses displeasure over SIT report on IIT Kharagpur student Faizan’s death

Kolkata, Nov. 24

Faizan Ahmad was a bright student with many dreams in the eyes. He joined IIT Kharagpur. But he didn’t know he would breathe his last in his most favourite educational institution. Last year, third-year mechanical engineering student Faizan’s body was found hanging in his hostel room.

On hearing the news, the parents stood shocked. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was asked to probe the case. However, on the submission of the report, the Calcutta High Court has expressed its unhappiness and ordered the SIT to submit a “proper report” before December 18, when it will hear the case next.

Asking IIT Kharagpur to help in the probe, and not to oppose it, the Court said after all one of their students had died. The SIT, the HC was told, could question IIT students after November 25, when the ongoing exams will come to an end.

Justice Jay Sengupta, in his order, said: It appears that the investigating agency has acceded to the request of the IIT authorities to interrogate the students after a particular date.

On October 14 last year, the hanging body of Faizan Ahmad was found in the hostel room of IIT Kharagpur. Faizan’s parents filed a case in the High Court. A committee was formed on the order of the High Court to investigate whether Faizan committed suicide or was murdered. Faizan’s head was hit with a heavy object on the back. The report said that a mark was also found.

Unnecessary time is being wasted in the investigation of the case. Faizan’s parents want to bring the truth of their son’s death to the world; they want the culprits to be punished and justice for their son.
