New Delhi, Nov. 30: India has voted in favour of UNGA resolutions on Tuesday, demanding from Israel to withdraw from Syria’s Golan Heights, to the line of June 4, 1967, when Israel had occupied it.
The resolution was adopted by 91 member-countries in favour, eight countries voted against it, while 62 abstained. Notably, the United States and United Kingdom were among the countries that voted against it. The draft resolution called “The Syrian Golan” was introduced by Egypt.
The resolution pointed out that Israel has not adhered to UN Security Council resolution 497. In 1981, UNSC had decided that the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect.
The 1981 resolution also reaffirmed that the acquisition of territory by force is “inadmissible, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, the principles of international law, and relevant Security Council resolutions.”
“The continued occupation of the Syrian Golan and its de facto annexation constitute a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region,” it said.
