1 May 2024: In the scorching heat of Giridih, the political fervor reached its peak as Kalpana Soren filed her nomination papers for the Gandey assembly by-poll, accompanied by an impressive gathering of supporters. Chief Minister Champai Soren, amidst addressing the rally, took a dig at BJP’s ‘Modi’s Guarantee’ campaign, questioning the veracity of the claims made by the ruling party.
The rally, a show of solidarity by the entire Soren family and INDIA bloc leaders, underscored Kalpana’s bid for the assembly seat left vacant by the resignation of Sarfaraz Ahmed. Speculations swirled regarding the succession of Hemant Soren, former chief minister, before his incarceration, with Kalpana emerging as a frontrunner. However, JMM opted for senior party leader Champai Soren, adding intrigue to the political landscape.
Basant Soren, Dumka MLA and brother of Hemant Soren, graced Kalpana’s nomination, further reinforcing familial support. Notably, JMM President Shibu Soren and his wife Rupi Soren lent their presence, symbolizing a unified front within the family ranks. The significance of their gathering was not lost on Sita Soren, widow of the late Durga Soren, as it sent a resounding message of solidarity to her amidst her contest as BJP’s candidate from Dumka against JMM.
The sweltering temperatures failed to deter the enthusiasm of the attendees, with 78-year-old Shibu Soren urging voters to rally behind Kalpana in the upcoming by-election.
In addition to the Soren family, a cadre of INDIA bloc leaders, including Congress minister Alamgir Alam, MLA Irfan Ansari, and RJD leader Satyanand Bhokta, pledged their support. Notable personalities like CPIML leader Vinod Singh and JMM’s Giridih and Dumka Lok Sabha candidates also graced the occasion, along with AAP representatives.
Chief Minister Champai Soren’s critique of BJP’s campaign rhetoric, particularly regarding Prime Minister Modi’s controversial statements during the Lok Sabha campaign, resonated with the audience. Kalpana, in her address, outlined her priorities, emphasizing the need for improved water supply and the establishment of a women’s degree college in Gandey.
With the promise of fulfilling the dreams of the women she represents, Kalpana Soren’s nomination rally served as a poignant testament to her vision and determination in the political arena. As the Gandey by-election looms on May 20, the stage is set for a fierce electoral contest amidst fervent support and critical scrutiny.
