New Delhi: The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on Abbas Ansari’s bail plea related to an unlawful jail visit case. The case involves the son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who sought bail in light of the accusations against him, reports The Times of India.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan deferred the hearing after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ansari, requested additional time. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 14, coinciding with Ansari’s plea to quash the Gangsters Act charges against him.
Abbas Ansari was implicated in an incident while incarcerated at Chitrakoot Jail, where he allegedly met his wife, Nikhat Bano, illegally, with the complicity of prison officials. In May, the Allahabad High Court denied him bail, citing his profile and the responsibilities of his position as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Justice Jaspreet Singh emphasized that lawmakers should uphold a higher standard of conduct.
In February of last year, during a raid, Nikhat Bano was reportedly found in possession of two mobile phones, cash totaling Rs 21,000, and 12 Saudi Riyals, leading to her arrest along with others for violating prison regulations. Following these events, the Uttar Pradesh government transferred Abbas Ansari to Kasganj Jail, and police arrested several prison officials for facilitating the illegal meetings in exchange for money.
