Former Civil Servants Urge Election Commission to Take Action Against PM Modi’s Communal Speech

26 Apr. 24: Ninety-three former civil servants, representing the Constitutional Conduct Group, have penned a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), demanding swift action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his alleged communal speech delivered in Banswara, Rajasthan, on April 21, 2024.

The letter, endorsed by former bureaucrats from various government departments, highlights concerns over PM Modi’s remarks, which were perceived as hate-filled and divisive. In the speech, PM Modi purportedly made derogatory comments targeting Muslims and the opposition, sparking outrage among citizens and drawing over 2,200 complaints to the ECI.

Professor Jagdeep S. Chhokar, a retired faculty member of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, also addressed the Commission, outlining specific violations of the Model Code of Conduct, the Representation of People Act, and the Indian Penal Code. Chhokar’s letter emphasizes the gravity of the situation and urges the ECI to take prompt action to maintain the integrity of the ongoing electoral process.

The former civil servants underscored their non-partisan stance, expressing their commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution of India. They called upon the ECI to uphold democratic values and ensure fair and transparent elections by addressing violations promptly.

The letter signifies a growing concern among retired bureaucrats regarding the state of political discourse and the need to uphold ethical standards during elections. It reflects a broader societal demand for accountability and integrity in political leadership.

As the election season unfolds, the ECI faces mounting pressure to address allegations of electoral misconduct and uphold the principles of free and fair elections. The Commission’s response to this appeal will be closely watched, as it holds implications for the credibility of India’s democratic process.
