Silver lining in Urdu medium schools admissions

– Mohammed Atherulla Shariff

Vijaypura, July 10: A systematic effort to increase admissions in government Urdu medium schools has shown encouraging results. A record number of 1536 new admissions took place this academic year.

The new in-charge District Education Officer Nawaz Khan Pathan had a threadbare discussion with the Cluster Resource Persons (CRPs) of the district and with the help of headmasters and other teachers undertook an intensive campaign in the neighbouring areas to impress upon the parents to get their wards admitted to Urdu Schools.

A monthlong drive in June comprised of door-to-door meetings and advertisements was successful. More than one thousand five hundred children sought new admissions from class one to six across the district, said Nawaz Khan Pathan. A special feature of the drive was admissions of the dropout children, who otherwise would not have turned up, he added.

Providing quality education is the need of the hour to retain the students in Urdu schools, which depends much on the competence and interest of the teachers. However proper monitoring from the higher authorities and training the staff from time to time may fetch more results in future.

At a time when many Urdu medium schools are on the verge of closure, the Vijayapura efforts have a silver lining for the rest of the state. (with inputs from Daily Salar)
